2006 Marathons
Salt Lake City Marathon, June 2006
Despite the high altitude, Salt Lake is a fun course. Its a
challenging course that is pretty low on the support, but all those
gorgeous mountains make up for it.

Portland Marathon, October 2006
Still one of my favorites races in terms of support from the city to
the neighborhoods, Portland will not disappoint. Nice weather, a
great course, this is one I strongly recommend!

Seattle Marathon, November 2006
Puddles on road, downpours, wind, snow and sideways hail this
weather can be summed up in one word...FUN! My hometown
did not disappoint in terms of doing exactly what the Northwest is
known for....but still a good, beautiful race course

2007 Marathons
Boston Marathon, April 2007
My first of 3 in 50 days started off windy, wet and cold. Despite all
that, Boston came out to support the 20,000+ runners and cheer
them to the cold, windy finish. I make a point not to do a
marathon more than once, but will make an exception here.

Flying Pig Marathon, May 2007
This marathon was a real joy. The whole city supports it and I
would recommend this one if you want a flat, pretty course with
lots of neighborhood support!

Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon, June 2007
One of most fun Marathons I have done to date. It's a course that
gains about 2000FT, is 13.1 miles up, crest the hill and 13.1
down. Beautiful trail run that is a real sleeper--get there before
the masses!! It was also my 3rd of 3 in 50 days

Las Vegas Marathon, December 2007
Perfect time of year...you can work off that turkey dinner and burn
off a few calories before the next holiday rolls around. The course
if neat in the fact you run down Strip but it lacks much past that.
Only trained 20 days and was sick..not a recipe for success!

2008 Marathons
New Orleans Marathon, February 2008
This was a tough race for a number of reasons. We stayed
about 1/2 block away from Bourbon Street which meant no sleep
for 2 days. I also was recovering from the flu and barely had
energy to do a run 3 days before. It was nearly perfect, cloudy for
the first 1.5 hours and then sunny hot for the last half. I made
pace with the help of two great guys I ran with along the course..I
even came back to them so I would not run the last 8 miles alone.
The course is nice, scenic and flat. Race organizers did a great
job with everything but advertising--that was weak. All in all, a
wonderful city and a great run.

Kentucky Derby Marathon, April, 2008
Kentucky treated me well. I came in with a bad wheel and had not
run in 3 weeks to rest it. While I seem to be on a bad streak of
health for my marathons, I performed well for this race. The
support in this area on the county has been great and I would
suggest this race for anyone who wants to see all the sites of
Louisville without having to stay too long. Run through parks,
Churchill Downs, neighborhoods and 4th street. Its a blast!

Chicago Marathon, October 2008
Chicago was the most exciting marathon I have run--spectators
10 deep--all cheering you on--amazing! I was in shape for a
great race but the day had different plans. It was hot at the start
and it got up to low 80's by the race end. I just got overheated
and was forced to slow down--frustrating, but necessary. It did
not take away from my excitement or the greatness of the

2009 Marathons

El Paso Marathon, March, 2009
El Paso always known for being windy and this day did not disappoint. The
wind was horrible for the last 8 miles and it showed via my time. This was my
first race of the season so I did not have huge expectations. I lost to first place
by 80 seconds, which is the closest race they have ever had. The next guy
behind my was 14 minutes back. El Paso was fun and exciting, but I have
Texas behind me and glad to never return for racing. The Roberts' cleaned
house with me getting second overall and my Father, Joe Roberts, placing
second in age group. Thanks for the good race Pat, first place he earned.
race...one for the record books.

Spokane Windermere Marathon, May 2009
Gorgeous Run along the Centennial Trail for most of its run. Started in Post
Falls and finished in Downtown Spokane. The course was sparsely populated
with spectators which gave way to the roar of the River and the birds. This is
good run, but might be tough if you are used to having a crowd of folks around
you...

Missoula Marathon, July 2009
This is an awesome race..if you like to see lots of country-side--as well as a
run home course. I love MT..and I love Missoula. This town really comes out
to support with some monumental cheers...you just have to run 21 miles to
hear it....once you arrive, you have have a cold one at the local pub while
locals share stories of hunting with you. Great race, great town. One of my
top 5.

New York City Marathon, November 2009
One word....AWESOME. Nearly 2 million come on to support you...at times
the crowd is so loud, you can't even hear your poor wife shouting or
jumping to catch your attention. Aside from the 12 hour race day..its takes a
while to get to the start and then home, this race is amazing. ING...I give
you my nod of acceptance. NYC...you are fantastic! Boston....take notes.
My most favorite race to date...

The years leading up...

San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, June 2005
My first in 11 years, I really struggled through this marathon. I
under trained and started out too fast--classic mistake! The Rock
and Roll marathons do have some of the best support I have ever
seen--all the bands, cheerleaders and crowds nearly every inch
of the course. A MUST do!

Honolulu Marathon, December 1992, 1993 and
1994
I did this marathon when I was 15,16, and 17. I don't
remember much about these--but it's Hawaii, who can say
anything bad?!

A brief History

The early years.
3rd of 3 kids. Spokane was an interesting place to grow up--I was born
here to two great, supportive parents. Bloomsday, the nation's largest
timed 12K, is what introduced me to running. My Dad dragged me
along the whole course and that was it--I was hooked. From there, I ran
track and cross-country for my Junior High and High School and having
a great time all the way! I was coached by R. Barbero, better known as
"B" assisted by "Espi"

College life.
I attended Eastern Washington for 2 years before moving to Seattle to
finish my degree at the University of Washington. I lived in the dorms for
1 year where I met some of my best friends to this date.

Married in Seattle.
Married in September of 2004 to my girlfriend of 5 years, we tied the knot
at Semiahmoo Resort. Surrounded by our closest friends and family,
my Father as the officiant, it was a party for the ages

A brief stint in Houston.
I moved to Texas with my wife in June, 2007. It was here I was truly
exposed to high heat and humidity. I joined Katy Fit to meet some new
folks and continue my running. Though my time was short, I did meet
some great people like Phil, Steve and Anita. I left after 3
months...."enuf said."

Making a home in the Bay Area.
I came to San Francisco and lived in Russian Hill for 2 months before
my beautiful wife joined me here after a career change and I decided to
call Burlingame home where we rent. What an exceptional city!

Why I run

This Blog is an archive of my running life and a collection of the things I like best related to running.
My awesome wife put together the structure and initial content as a Christmas present (2007) and I will
add to it over time to reflect on the past, capture the present, and dream of the future. I know live in
Burlingame, California which is about 15 miles south of San Francisco with my wife.
